DIY Halloween Costumes

So I realize that this is really, really late and that Halloween was already 4 months ago, but I thought I would post this anyway. :)
This year Tyler and I were Johnny Raincloud and Little Miss Sunshine for Halloween. We didn't want to try to find costumes at the store, mostly because they can be expensive- especially if you are only going to wear them for a few hours. So I decided to make ours this year. We also wanted ones that were easy to get on and off with very little hassle and also ones that would be easy to chase a toddler around in. Here's how I made them. It was SUPER easy.
First, I folded my felt in half (so that the material would be extra thick and a little less flimsy for wearing) and drew a large circle. I did this by attaching one end of a string to my sharpie marker and the other end of the string to a straight pin. I used the straight pin as an "anchor." I pulled the string taut and rotated my sharpie marker around the pin. Then I pinned all the way around the edges and cut out the circle.

Then I sewed around the edges, removing the pins as I went.

Next, I used the scraps I had left to draw and cut out triangles to go around the outside of the circle.

I laid out all of the triangles around the circle to make sure they would be spaced correctly.
Then I cut out smaller triangles in orange to add some dimension to the sun beams.
I pinned the smaller triangles to the larger ones and sewed them down.

Then I pinned the finished sun beams to the circle and sewed those on. Then I cut a strip of felt to use as the "neck strap". Make sure you pin it in a place where you still have enough room to get it over your head. :)
I used the exact same process to make Tyler's costume. To make sure that the costumes were relatively the same size, I laid out the grey material on top of the finished sun before I drew the cloud.

I also made sure to double the material so it was a little less flimsy. I also used some of the leftover yellow material to make a lightening bolt to go with the cloud.

And here is the finished product!!

And I couldn't help but include one of our little dinosaur as well. :)
Well, thanks for reading! You were all so nice to humor me in my slightly delayed Halloween post! Haha! :)
